New Standards Make Drop-Side Cribs Illegal

(July 21, 2011) As of June 28, it is illegal to possess, use, distribute, or sell a drop-side curb. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission set forth new standards in response to deaths of almost a dozen children over the past two decades, making the over 2.1 million drop-side crib recall the biggest in U.S. history.

The CPSC reports that if the crib is assembled improperly – or if the crib just happens to malfunction – the drop-side could detach and could trap the baby between the drop-side and crib mattress. If you still own a drop-side crib and do not want to replace it, CPSC chairman Inez Tenenbaum is recommending that consumers buy plastic kits from the manufacturers to immobilize the crib sides.

It should also be noted that even if you see a drop-side crib for sale at a yard-sale, it is illegal for them to sell (and for you to purchase) this crib, and both parties may be held liable. You might not get caught, but why would you want to sell a crib that could lead to an infant’s death?

What do you think about these new standards? Are you happy, or do they come as an inconvenience? Leave us a comment and stop by our website for more information.
